Interactive chess · engine + lichess cloud analysis
Hunt the gambit
Interactive boards with click-to-move exploration, an embedded engine and lichess cloud evaluation — plus a crawler that walks opening trees hunting for sound sacrifices whose natural refutations lose.
▶ Play
- ▶ Play the engine — pick a time control (Bullet 1+0 · Blitz 3+2 · Rapid 10+5, or untimed) and a strength, hit Play and get White or Black at random, chess.com-style: no evaluation bar or engine lines during the game, settings locked, resign with 🏳. At the end the kings are marked (✓ winner · # mated · ⌛ flagged · ½ draw) and the analysis tools return.
- 🕰 My games — finished games are recorded automatically (and any game can be saved mid-way). Replay them on the full board, deviate anywhere, and run ▶ Analyze game: a win-percentage graph with blunders (??), mistakes (?) and inaccuracies (?!) flagged and clickable.
♞ The gambit library
- 🧭 Gambit tour — the guided walk: four gambits from sound to unsound on live boards, ending at the crawler. Start here if you're new.
- ♞ Alien Gambit — the reference line (mainline Caro-Kann, 5.Ng5 h6 6.Nxf7!?): a full knight for one pawn, engine says −1, humans score 59%.
- 🎃 Halloween Gambit, ⚔️ Englund Gambit (mate-in-eight trap included) and ♛ Queen's Gambit — each with its theory, traps and refutations in the notes.
- 🔎 Caro-Kann Hunt — the gambit-hunting crawl, seeded from the family that produced the Alien Gambit. Hit Run hunt and it ranks candidate sacrifices by brilliance.
The dynamic node types
- Game — a chess game/study: a start FEN plus SAN moves, rendered as an interactive board with an evaluation bar, engine + cloud analysis, deviation from any ply, a play-the-engine mode with time controls, automatic game recording and built-in whole-game analysis. Create your own to study any line.
- GambitHunt — a bounded opening-tree crawl. Point it at any opening (seed moves), pick the sacrificing side, and it ranks candidate gambits by a brilliance score. Add a lichess API token to fold in human win rates.
- History — the per-viewer game history behind My games: lists the games recorded in your own space.
See the Guide for how the engine, the lichess client, and the hunter work.
